Consumer Protection

Zambia has been elected the first African nation to head the International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network (ICPEN). Its consumer watchdog, the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), was elected chair of the ICPEN for 201819 tenure during the ICPEN annual conference recently held in Germany, according to the statement released by Zambia’s Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry.

CCPC Executive Director Kelvin Sampa said as the first African country to lead the ICPEN, Zambia would leverage its position in the regional blocs to grow the network and influence the participation of other African countries in the organization.

Currently, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, Angola, Seychelles and Zambia are the only African countries in this global network of governmental consumer protection authorities from over 50 countries. Zambia had maintained a partnership status without voting rights for two years before becoming an official member in 2013. CA
