South African Smashes 1,000-meter Record

Caster Semenya broke the South African 1,000 meter record on March 8 that had stood for 35 years, while competing at the Athletix Grand Prix meeting held at the University of Pretoria in Tshwane, South Africa. Semenya won the race in a time of 2:35.44, beating the old record set in 1983 by Ilze Wicksell by almost two seconds. The Olympic gold medalist was followed by Winnie Nanyondo and Halimah Nakaayi of Uganda. Semenya is part of the South African team that will compete in the 2018 Commonwealth Games from April 4 to 15 at the Gold Coast in Australia.

2018 L’O real-UN ESCO Women in Science L aureate

Chinese scientist MeeMann C hang made the list of five laureates of the 2018 L’Oreal-UNESCO Women in Science Awards, an initiative to promote greater gender equality in science, the UN agency said on March 8 in a communiqué.

This year, the UNESCO recognized five exceptional female scientists, including Chang.

She was nominated for “her pioneering work on fossil records leading to insights on how aquatic vertebrates adapted to life and land,” UNESCO said in a statement.
