China’s Top 10 Charity Organizations



China Charity Federation

Established: April 12, 1994

Administrative agency: Ministry of Civil Affairs

China Charity Federation was the first national non-governmental organization to use the word “charity” in its official name since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. It is an important witness and propeller of philanthropic causes of modern China. The federation has carried out dozens of charitable projects in areas including disaster relief, poverty alleviation, education, caring for orphans and the elderly, helping the disabled, and providing medical aid.




China Youth Development Foundation

Established: March 8, 1989

Administrative agency: Central Committee of the Communist Young League

China Youth Development Foundation works to develop Chinese youth by promoting education in science and technology, culture, physical education, health, and environmental protection. It is best known for launching and managing the “Project Hope” that aims to help children in China’s poverty-stricken rural areas receive education by raising donations. Statistics show that Project Hope has attracted donations totaling 10.725 billion yuan, of which 9.919 billion yuan has been used to provide schooling for 5,188,528 students and build 18,642 Project Hope schools.




China Soong Ching Ling Foundation

Established: May 29, 1982

Administrative agency: Ministry of Civil Affairs

Of China’s top 10 national charity organizations, China Soong Ching Ling Foundation is the only one named after a former state leader. In 1982, the foundation was officially founded in honor of Soong Ching-ling, the late Honorary President of the People’s Republic of China. It has long been dedicated to promoting international friendship, exchange across the Taiwan Straits, healthcare for women and children, poverty alleviation, education, popularization of sciences, literature and arts, sports, and public health, exerting wide influence both at home and abroad.




China Women’s Development Foundation

Established: December 1988

Administrative agency: All-China Women’s Federation

China Women’s Development Foundation focuses on issues concerning the most pressing, direct, and difference-making interests of women. It has carried out a series of charitable projects in fields like poverty alleviation, healthcare, and female entrepreneurship, which achieved impressive results.




China Disabled Persons’ Federation

Established: March 1988

Administrative agency: State Council of China

China Disabled Persons’ Federation is a national organization comprised of representatives with disabilities and social workers in the field. The China Foundation for Disabled Persons under the federation is dedicated to improving rehabilitation, education and employment of people with disabilities. It has carried out myriad influential charitable projects such as “Charity Gala Ball,” “Enlightenment Project” and “China Accessibility Forum,” and launched the charity brand “Goodwill Project.”


China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation

Established: March 13, 1989

Administrative agency: The State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development

Targeting the major causes of poverty, the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation is committed to improving healthcare standards, promoting educational equality, fostering the development of rural communities, and providing humanitarian assistance to disaster victims. It has established a complete, systematic and scientific project management mechanism and carried out various assistance and advocacy projects, becoming the country’s largest and most influential charity organization in the field of poverty alleviation.




China Foundation for Justice and Courage

Established: June 1993

Administrative agency: Ministry of Public Security

Of the top charity organizations, the China Foundation for Justice and Courage has the most clearly-defined target. It specializes in honoring, rewarding and promoting those who have performed heroic deeds. It conducts theoretical research on heroism and promotes legislation on heroic deeds. Since its establishment, the foundation has launched a series of projects such as “Contest for Heroic Drivers,” “Fulfilling Dreams with Love,” and “China Facial Surgery Assistance for Wounded Heroes.” The foundation has made great contributions to promoting heroism, sponsoring legislation on heroic deeds, and building a harmonious society.




Red Cross Society of China

Established: March 10, 1904

Administrative agency: State Council of China

The history of the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) can be traced back to 1904. The RCSC joined the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1912. RCSC has been involved in preparing disaster relief, assisting the wounded and victims in natural disasters and other emergency events, spreading healthcare education, providing medical aid, preventing disease, performing basic medical training, collecting and distributing donated blood, sponsoring activities for youths, and joining international humanitarian relief.




China Environmental Protection Foundation

Established: April 1993

Administrative agency: Ministry of Environmental Protection

The China Environmental Protection Foundation is the country’s first non-profit and non-governmental organization with independent legal person status in its realm. Since its establishment, the foundation has carried out a series of charity projects including the Survey on Public Awareness of Environmental Protection, Chinese Environment Award, and Green Education, making significant contributions to environmental protection in China.




China Glory Society

Established: October 25, 1995

Administrative agency: United Front Work Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC)

China Glory Society is an organization dedicated to poverty alleviation that was founded and managed by private entrepreneurs with support from the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee and the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce. With private enterprises as its mainstay, the society has provided investment and promoted development of former revolutionary base areas, areas inhabited by minorities, remote and border areas, and poverty-stricken areas in central and western China, as well as reorganization and reform of state-own enterprises, reemployment of laid-off workers, relocation of former residents in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, and industrial restructuring. Moreover, it has carried out several poverty reduction projects, winning wide acclaim from the public.
